The Power of Feedback and Communication in Personal Growth and Relationships

Growing up, we are shaped by various experiences, environments, and people around us.
Our parents, relatives, and close friends observe us closely as we navigate through life, forming their own perceptions of who we are. However, as we grow older and embark on our own journeys, our lives evolve physical, mental, and spiritual in ways that others may not fully comprehend. Yet, some individuals might still cling to their initial perceptions, believing that they know us better than we know ourselves. Our parents, in particular, may have a strong and lasting view of who we are, rooted in memories and experiences from our early years.
Intrigued by this notion, during a recent pause in my journey, I decided to gain insights into how my loved ones perceive me. I wanted to understand their thoughts and perspectives on who I am today. So, in my family group-chat I asked a simple question to my family, my husband, and my three children: "Could you please write five positive and five negative points about me? No need to think too much just write open and honest from your own perspectives?" To ensure their responses were unbiased, I requested that they send their answers directly to me, rather than sharing them in our family group chat.
It was a pleasantly surprising experience to read the thoughts that flowed in. My youngest daughter, a delightful 13-year-old, eagerly began listing my negative traits first. Her innocent perspective was heart warming to witness. My 20-year-old son, a man of few words, conveyed his answers succinctly through bullet points. From my 18-year-old daughter, I received a thoughtfully articulated and profound viewpoint. While my children promptly sent their responses, understanding the purpose behind the exercise, my sweet husband needed a gentle reminder the next day.
Despite my clear instructions in the chat, he eventually shared his negative points only. This led to a small argument about miscommunication, during which I emphasized my desire for both positive and negative feedback. His response amused me as he stated, "Oh, I thought you only wanted the negative!" Men, oh men, sometimes they have their own interpretation of things.
But let's move on from that episode. What genuinely captivated me was the wide array of viewpoints and feedback I received. Each of them viewed me through their own unique lens, shaped by their experiences with me. Some highlighted my strengths and virtues, affirming qualities I had worked hard to develop. Others pointed out areas where I could improve, providing valuable insights that I might not have recognized on my own. It was a humbling experience, reminding me that self-awareness can be enhanced through the eyes of those who love and care for us.
This exercise also reinforced the importance of effective communication within relationships. It reminded me that assumptions can lead to misunderstandings and highlighted the need for clarity in our interactions. Asking for feedback from our loved ones can be a powerful tool for personal growth and strengthening the bonds we share. It enables us to deepen our understanding of ourselves and create opportunities for open dialogue.
As we journey through life, we continually evolve. Our perspectives, values, and priorities shift, and it is essential for others to recognize and respect these changes. We owe it to ourselves to explore the depths of our being and embrace personal growth. By seeking the thoughts and perspectives of our loved ones, we invite a deeper connection and foster an environment of understanding and support.
Embrace the Journey, Embrace Yourself
So, take a moment to pause on your own journey. Reach out to those who know you well, and kindly ask them to share their perspectives on who you have become. Embrace the positive feedback, celebrate your growth, and honour the areas where you can continue to develop. Through open communication and genuine curiosity, we can bridge the gap between how others perceive us and who we truly are. And in doing so, we cultivate a richer, more authentic understanding of ourselves and our relationships
